What is a Solar Pergola?

A Solar Pergola by Go Solar is a custom designed and made in either  steel or stainless steel, with solar panels integrated. Pergolas provide additional shade, whilst allowing any breeze to pass through. These structures are very welcome in the sun in southern Spain. BUT when the pergolas are integrated with solar panels it blends practical protection with clean energy generation.

Why Choose a Solar Pergola Instead of Rooftop Panels?

Many property owners prefer solar pergolas over roof solar installations for both practical and architectural reasons:

  • Roofs with complex shapes or limited usable space can make solar installation inefficient or impractical
  • Some roofs are partially shaded, reducing solar performance
  • A solar pergola preserves and enhances valuable solarium or terrace space instead of occupying it
  • It creates usable shaded outdoor living areas while generating energy at the same time
  • Installation avoids concerns around roof structure condition or suitability
  • Maintenance and access are typically easier compared to rooftop systems
  • There is no risk of roof penetration, which many homeowners prefer to avoid
  • The structure becomes an architectural feature, improving the overall look and usability of the property

For many homeowners, the choice is not just about energy generation, but about how the structure enhances the way they use their outdoor space.

How much energy does a Solar Pergola produce?

A typical solar pergola in southern Spain can generate between 8,000 and 10,000 kWh per year, depending on the size, panel type, orientation, and sunlight conditions.  The most common installations contain between 10 – 14 panels.  A common 12-panel system can often produce enough electricity to cover most of a home’s daytime energy use, including air conditioning and EV charging.

Will I require planning permission for a solar pergola?

The good news? If it’s needed, we take care of all this on your behalf.

We have extensive experience working with local town halls and navigating the different regulations across southern Spain.   Planning permission requirements for solar pergolas vary depending on your location and property type.  Regulations differ between autonomous regions such as Andalusia and Region of Murcia, Alicante and even between individual municipalities and provinces.

Requirements may also depend on the classification of your land, including:

  • Urban land (suelo urbano)
  • Rustic or rural land (suelo rústico)
  • Protected land
  • Coastal or special planning zones

BUT If permission is needed – we manage the entire process for you.
