Solar panels southern Spain – FAQ

If you’re thinking of installing solar panels in southern Spain, it’s likely you’ve got some questions. Here are a few of our most frequently asked questions (FAQ). Take a look – and if you’ve got questions or decided you’d like to get a free quote, contact us.

How much solar power can I generate in southern Spain?

Southern Spain is one of Europe’s sunniest regions, with Almería and surrounding areas receiving around 3,000+ hours of sunshine per year. A typical 5 kWp system here can generate 7,000–8,500 kWh annually — significantly more than the same system in northern Europe.

What permits and licences do I need to install solar panels?

For most residential installations you’ll need a municipal building licence (licencia de obras) and, once installed, you must register with your autonomous community’s energy registry (REES) and notify the electricity distributor. Here at Go Solar we handle all paperwork on your behalf.

Can I sell excess electricity back to the grid?

Yes. Since 2021, Spain’s ‘autoconsumo colectivo’ regulations allow you to feed surplus electricity into the grid and receive a credit on your electricity bill (compensación simplificada). The rate is set by your energy supplier and varies, but it’s a straightforward way to offset costs.

Are there grants or subsidies available in Andalusia?

Yes. The Spanish government and the Junta de Andalucía periodically offer grants through programmes such as Plan MOVES III and European Recovery Fund initiatives, which can cover 15–40% of installation costs. What size system do I need for my home?

System size depends on two factors. Firstly your annual electricity consumption and secondly your available roof space. A typical family home in southern Spain uses around 4,000–6,000 kWh per year, and a 3–6 kWp system will usually cover most of that. We carry out a free on-site assessment to recommend the right size for you. If you would like us to come and take a look and provide a quote give me a call: +34 654 59 62 47

Do I need battery storage?

Batteries are optional but increasingly popular. Without storage, surplus energy is exported to the grid (with compensation). With storage, you can use your own solar energy at night and during cloudy periods, increasing self-consumption to 70–90%. We’ll model both scenarios for you.

How long does installation take?

For a standard residential installation, the physical work typically takes 1, sometimes 2 days. We also submit permit applications and grid connection paperwork.

What is the payback period for a solar installation?

In southern Spain, most residential systems pay for themselves in 5–8 years, depending on system size, energy consumption, and grid tariff. With a system lifespan of 25–30 years, you can expect 17–25 years of near-free electricity. And before that – guilt free use of air con and heating.

Will solar panels work during cloudy days or in summer heat?

Yes — panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunlight, so they still produce on overcast days (though output is reduced). Interestingly, panels are most efficient at cooler temperatures; the intense summer heat of Andalusia can reduce peak output slightly, but longer days more than compensate.

What maintenance do solar panels require?

Very little. Panels are self-cleaning to a large extent, though in dusty areas like Almería it helps to rinse them a few times a year. Most quality panels carry a 25-year performance warranty and a 10–12 year product warranty.

What happens if I have a flat or tiled roof?

Solar panels from GoSolar installed at an angle on a flat roof

We install on all roof types — pitched clay or concrete tile, flat concrete, metal, and SIPS panels. Flat roofs use adjustable mounting frames angled for optimal sun exposure. We conduct a structural survey before installation to ensure the roof can support the panels safely.

Do I need to inform my home insurance provider?

Yes, you should notify your insurer so the system is covered under your policy. Most standard home insurance policies in Spain will extend to cover solar panels, though some insurers require a specific rider. We can provide documentation for your insurer upon completion.
