Roof Solar Panels in Southern Spain

Most homeowners choose their roof as the natural first choice for solar panel installation, and it’s easy to see why. Whether you have a traditional tiled roof or a flat roof, panels can be successfully installed on both.  In Southern Spain we have a significant advantage: with over 300 days of sunshine a year, even a roof that doesn’t face due south can generate excellent returns.  

On flat roofs, panels are mounted at a slight angle to maximise sun exposure throughout the day. On sloped roofs, they sit flush with the roof surface, following its pitch.

Solar panels generate electricity in daylight, not just in bright sunlight.  A south-facing pitch at the ideal angle is great, but east- or west-facing roofs — or those with a shallower slope — still perform far better here in Spain, than the same installation would in northern Europe.

Available Space

There are two main factors that determine how many solar panels will be installed. 

1. The size of the useable roof space.   Solar panels don’t get “cut” to fit in awkward spaces.
2. The amount of electricity your household consumes 

For the majority of properties we find installations of between 10 – 14 panels generate sufficient for most household needs.  Every roof is different – which is why we don’t offer a one size fits all approach.   But to give you a “ball park” idea each panel is 115 cm x 175 cm.  There are clips between the panels — so allow 130 cm x 175 cm per panel.  The spacing also allows the strong winds that can affect this area to pass through, rather than pushing against a solid surface.

A 15-panels square layout is a configuration more typically used within a solar pergola.
